About this trip idea
Allow 2-3 days.
Let Noble County tell you the story of food along the Farm to Fork Trail . Agricultural producers in the Indiana countryside demonstrate how delicious meals are grown and prepared and give you an unforgettable taste of farm fresh goodness.
On the farm
Ride through a field of more than 300 bison at Cook's Bison Ranch in Wolcottville. During this adventure, you'll learn the process of raising and caring for bison and get close enough to hand feed some of them. Depending on which tour you choose, enjoy a sample of tender bison meat, a bison burger lunch or a bison roast dinner. Then rest your head at Rome City's Mirror Lake Bed & Breakfast . Enjoy an overnight in one of three accommodations - 180-year-old farmhouse, a rustic lakehouse or a primitive cabin. Explore their 150 acres of farmland, visit the 1800s family cemetery, stroll through the herb and flower gardens, walk in the woods or relax by the lake.
Inhale deeply as you approach The Lavender Lane in Rome City, and let the aroma of lavender soothe you. This herb is rich with therapeutic and medicinal qualities, and the McCreery family grows more than 12 varieties on their secluded farm. Walk the trails through the lavender fields or visit the farm store to purchase bath salts, oil, potpourri, soap and sachets made on the farm. Lavender is for more than smelling - sample delicious dishes like lavender almond cake or lavender chicken as the McCreerys teach you how to cook with the herb. Take home fresh lavender to try the recipes later!
On the fork
Roam 25 acres of rolling farmland in Albion and experience a unique, sustainable farming model at Fox Trail Farm . The land features an heirloom apple orchard - aptly named since the land has been in the owner's family for six generations - vegetable, herb and flower gardens, an apiary and a stocked pond. Learn how the farm uses natural and sustainable production methods and runs on renewable energy sources. Visit the farm stand to purchase fresh asparagus, apples, watermelon, honey, squash, cucumbers and other delectable treats - yum!
For four generations, the Owen family has tended the land and produced maple syrup at Maple Acres in Avilla. Wear your hiking boots to tour the maple trees and the sugar bush, where you can see how the Owen family gathered sap with wooden buckets 60 years ago and the modern technology used today. Peek in the kitchen where syrup is finished and bottled, and taste the pure maple syrup, candies and cream made from nature's offerings.
Simple grapes become incredible wine at Country Heritage Winery & Vineyard in LaOtto. Make an appointment to tour the vineyard and winery and hear about grape tending procedures, the slow fermentation process that perfects reds and the cool fermentation that makes delicious whites. Step into the tasting room, where the pure flavors of award-winning traminette, honey mead or heritage rose reflect the carefully nurtured fruit from which they were created. Taste jams, honey, chocolates and cheese made by local producers, too!
