The Indiana Dunes area draws visitors to their sandy beaches for a day of sun and relaxation, but the area provides so much more than just a great place to suntan. South of the dunes radiates a distinct art and history culture in and around Chesterton that contains world-famous artwork, historic buildings and bountiful bites to eat just waiting to be discovered.
Start with Art
The Chesterton Art Center , housed in an old machine shop, provides a unique and one-of-a-kind art experience for visitors upon entering the building. Exhibits change monthly offering something new to discover every visit. Over 100 regional artists’ works are on display - some even are for sale. On select Saturdays, the Center hosts an interactive “Brown Bag Art” event hosted by the artists themselves where visitors can create their own artwork in a variety of forms - anything from paints, ceramic and stained glass.
A Blast from the Past
Take a glimpse into the past at the Westchester Township History Museum and uncover the area’s story from beginning to end. The permanent exhibit within the museum traces Westchester Township’s history from the glacial era to present-day Northern Indiana. Works of art by historic and contemporary artists line the walls around a variety of temporary exhibits about local history. Temporary exhibits are rotated out every four months on different historic period in Westchester Township. These exhibits reveal tales of different eras including rich history of pioneer settlements, immigration, agricultural development, industrial growth and the preservation of the Indiana Dunes.
A Taste of Europe
Each Saturday (May to October) Chesterton's European Market allows Hoosiers far and wide to get a taste of European culinary treats from their own backyard. With over 150 registered vendors, customers are able to indulge in famous foreign fortes like artisan breads and pastries, boutique creamery cheeses, crepes and other ethnic foods. Known for its charm and entertainment, visitors are able to enjoy and interact with various vendors while enjoying live artisan entertainment.
