About this trip idea
Allow 2-3 days.
If you are looking for a few quiet days of togetherness, Madison is the place for you. Sitting along the Ohio River, Madison’s breathtaking views set the stage for relaxing and taking it all in.
Clifty Falls State Park and Clifty Inn, a relaxing retreat
Waterfalls have long been equated with romantic getaways and Clifty Falls State Park is home to seven. Take a relaxing – or rigorous – hike through the park to see the beautiful rock gorges and scenic overlooks. Overnight accommodations are available at the Clifty Falls Inn . The river-view rooms are perched on a beautiful river bluff overlooking the Ohio River.
Strolling the Historic District and a table for two
Take in the historic beauty of Madison’s 133-block Historic District. This National Historic Landmark encompasses the Main Street shopping district and several residential areas. Shop All Good Things for soaps and body-care products made in Madison. See a showcase of local talent in the Madison Art Club. Pick up something for your home at Something Simple. Watch Indiana Artisan Darlene Yarnetsky at work in Mudcat Pottery. Treat yourself to something homemade and delicious at Cocoa Safari Chocolates. Then stroll along the brick walkways and find a gazebo in Riverfront Park.
Housed in an 1800s button factory, family-owned Key West Shrimp House overlooks the Ohio River. Specializing in seafood, of course, the menu also includes steaks and chicken. For a continental menu with a Greek accent, try Bistro One. The Greek Cypriot chef delivers creative, seasonal fare. After dinner cuddle up in a horse-drawn carriage for a tour of the Riverfront.
Sample Madison-made wines
Three Madison wineries, all stops along the Indiana Wine Trail, invite you to taste their creations. Watch the sunset from the deck of Madison Wineries as you sip their wines, which reflect the rich, complex soils in which their grapes are grown. Check the schedule for their Twilight Tasting Dinners, featuring a four-course meal. Madison’s oldest winery, Lanthier Winery , includes The Loft Gallery, one of the most popular art galleries in town. Tour the cellar tasting room, production room, gardens and vineyard. Thomas Family Winery , housed in an 1850s stable and carriage house, handcrafts old-world hard ciders in addition to traditional wines. Most Saturday evenings they feature acoustical music like Celtic, bluegrass or modern folk.
