6 hours, 9 minutes
1 START HERE: RICHMOND Six shops in this city kick off Antique Alley, a 33-mile length of the Old National Road, where nearly a thousand antique dealers peddle their wares. You’ll find vintage gems, collectibles and cool items to paint and make your own.
2 FOUNTAIN CITY (9 miles/15 min.) The Levi Coffin House here was known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad—it’s where more than 2,000 slaves found their way to freedom. You can crawl into a secret attic chamber where slaves were hidden for their safety and see a false-bottom wagon that still stands here.
3 MUNCIE (35 miles/47 min.) Stroll the themed gardens for free at Minnetrista, which takes its name from the F.C. Ball home that once stood on its site. The 40-acre campus includes a rose garden, sunken garden, butterfly garden and many more.
4 KOKOMO (56 miles/80 min.) The new Kokomo Jackrabbits baseball team plays all summer long; off-season, there are museums and art galleries to explore here.
5 HUNTINGTON (57 miles/65 min.) Browse vintage finds at the eclectic shop Antiqology, which also serves up the biggest selection of craft sodas in the Midwest.
6 FORT WAYNE (26 miles/42 min.) The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo and Science Central, a hands- on kids’ museum, are two big draws for families. The famous Vera Bradley Outlet Sale is in the spring.
7 ALBION (30 miles/45 min.) Tour the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, which provides lifelong refuge for nearly 100 exotic animals that were raised in captivity. You’ll see big and small cats, canines, bears, primates, birds, reptiles and more, representing more than 50 species.
9 LIGONIER (12 miles/19 min.) The Annie Oakley Perfumery offers factory tours and the chance to create your own fragrance. Take a driving tour of the 34 murals in Ligonier’s downtown area. If it’s October, make sure to swing by Fashion Farm, whose Pumpkin Fantasyland includes amazing displays of U.S. presidents and story- book and movie characters, all made from pumpkins, gourds and squash.
9 ROME CITY (16 miles/24 min.) Nearly 150 acres of shoreline, fields, woods and formal gardens make up the Gene Stratton- Porter State Historic Site, a tribute to the author of The Girl of the Limberlost and other books. You can take a guided tour of the cabin where she once lived, or just stroll the grounds on your own.
10 AUBURN (23 miles/32 min.) Come to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum to see more than 120 vintage cars and related artifacts.
