About this trip idea
Finally: time for just the two of you. Snap a shot in front of a famous sculpture that declares your “LOVE” to the world. Leisurely bicycle rides, scenic strolls and sunset views await. You’re on the road to romance.
ROLL ALONG THE RIVER The Ohio River Scenic Byway runs straight through Madison, one of Indiana’s prettiest river towns. Rent some wheels at Fizz’z Bike Shop to explore the 133-block historic district’s antique shops and artisan boutiques. Nosh on salami and cheese at the cozy tasting room at Thomas Family Winery.
TRY A TRIP-WORTHY TAVERN It may feel like the middle of nowhere, but that doesn’t stop foodies from making the drive and tailgating outside until a table opens up at Bonge’s Tavern. The 21-and-over restaurant has an ever-changing menu, but look for favorites like applewood-smoked prime rib.
SIP A SWEET RED The picturesque tasting room at Oliver Winery just north of Bloomington serves up crisp hard cider and dozens of wines, including its trendy new Bubblecraft varieties. Come for a sip, tour the production facility, then linger on the grounds for a picnic.
SMELL THE ROSES Take a stroll through the Shiojiri Niwa, a garden that symbolizes the city’s sister relationship with Shiojiri City in Japan. Its Garden Bridge is a symbolic link between this world and paradise—a meaningful place to discuss your own happily-ever-after. Head up the hill to the Teahouse Pavilion for the best scenic view.
HAVE A LIGHT- BULB MOMENT Paris may be the City of Light, but tiny Wabash—population 10,666—was the world’s first electrically lighted city. Seek out bright surprises in the well-preserved downtown core, then book a room at the Charley Creek Inn. Its Green Hat Lounge piano bar is the perfect place to wind down—its live entertainment is inspired by Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter.
PHOTO OP! Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture, on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, is the perfect backdrop for a smooch selfie. Experts recently overhauled the sculpture, sandblasting away decades of rust, but it’s slowly returning to its original brownish patina.
GLASS IT UP Follow the Indiana Glass Trail to downtown Muncie, where a cluster of art galleries honors the glass-making legacy of the hometown Ball Corporation. Don’t miss Stephen Knapp’s innovative Light Symphony artwork—made of colored glass and light—at Ball State University’s Sursa Hall.
ROLL THE DICE Taking a gamble on love? Throw the dice for real in Southern Indiana at Hollywood Casino, Belterra Casino Resort or Rising Star Casino Resort.
SEEK OUT A SUNSET After a devastating flood in 1937, the entire town of Leavenworth decamped to the top of a nearby bluff, where a former chicken hatchery became the Overlook Restaurant. Enjoy a 20-mile panoramic view of the Ohio River from your table as you dine on crisp fried chicken, divine barbecued ribs and blackberry cobbler.
