This dog-friendly, oak preserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies offers a variety of events, classes and exhibits year-round. Explore the varying landscapes via hiking trails, quiet corners and beautiful vistas. Taltree's formal gardens include the Railway Garden, Hitz Family Rose Garden, Adventure Garden and the Native Plant Garden. The Railway Garden is the most intricate of the formal gardens. This model train garden showcases early 19th century American railroad history. Up to nine trains run along 3,000 feet of track through a prairie and mountain landscape of miniature trees and plants. Thomas & Friends™ sightings daily! With more than 100 species of oaks from around the world, Taltree offers one of the most diverse oak collections in the nation. Species from North America, Europe and Asia can be seen in their Oak Islands exhibit. Taltree is located in Northwest Indiana approximately 1.5 hours from Chicago, half hour from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and 2.5 hours from Indianapolis. All proceeds received support their environmental conservation and education efforts.
