Summer is the perfect time to visit Hendricks County, especially for a weekend getaway with so much to see and do at affordable prices. Do you enjoy the outdoors? How about a guided horseback ride through the stunning woodlands at Natural Valley Ranch in Brownsburg? Is fishing or hiking more your thing? Then either of the two county parks—McCloud Nature Park in North Salem or Sodalis Nature Park in Plainfield—provides the perfect getaway. Need a little less nature and a little more fun and sun poolside? We have that, too, with Splash Island Family Waterpark and its tropical-themed, 4-1/2-acre water playland in Plainfield.

If you want to plan your weekend getaway around an event, mid-May would be a great time to visit as the small town of Danville transforms into the 1960s fictional community that was home to Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and Barney during the Mayberry in the Midwest festival. Held May 15-17, this zany event will include appearances by former cast members of the show and Don Knotts’ real-life daughter, performances by tribute artists reprising some of the show’s iconic characters, a Mayberry-themed parade, Squad Car Nationals and much more.

Aunt Bee’s Famous Friend Chicken is always on the menu at Mayberry Café, just one example of the fun and delicious places to dine. Many of the locally owned restaurants use farm-fresh ingredients fro their unique menu items.

Destination restaurants throughout the county, from down home to upscale.

Then in June, things heat up, literally, with Glass Artists in Action June 12-13, which features some of the most talented glass artists in not only Hendricks County but around the Midwest demonstrating their craft. This event always proves to be an amazing spectacle with some special surprises that shouldn’t be missed.

But that truly only scratches the surface of what there is to see and do every summer weekend in Hendricks County with a bevy of shopping and dining options, tons of recreation attractions, motorsports, arts and culture and so many family fun activities you might have trouble fitting it all into one weekend.
