About Exhibit: Votes for Women
It was 100 years ago, on August 18, 1920, that women’s suffrage reached a monumental turning point when ratification of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was achieved. The long-fought-for legal guarantee of women’s right to vote was celebrated, although many groups continued to face barriers on the way to the polls. There were other important milestones to come, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The exhibit commemorates this year’s anniversary of the 19th Amendment and celebrates local women who have contributed to the growth of the South Bend region, making a positive difference in the community we know today.
