About Poetry as Spiritual Practice: Reading, Praying and Writing

Poetry of the Psalms and poetry of all creation can help stimulate all life, and with that in mind, take time out of your schedule to join the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, for “Poetry as Spiritual Practice: Reading, Praying and Writing.” The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Providence Spirituality & Conference Center. During the workshop, enjoy a day filled with reading, praying and writing poetry with facilitator Sister Mary Montgomery. “I think the arts can, and do, enhance human life in general, and thus spiritual life,” Sister Mary said. “I think of retreats and some workshops as art. I’m particularly fascinated with poetry because of the insight that comes with just a few words. “Images and metaphors nourish my spirit, heart and mind. My daily experience is reading and praying the Psalms and other Hebrew and Christian scriptures, as well as other selections. I sometimes incorporate a variety of poetry or other art into my prayer.” Sister Mary said the workshop will focus on a variety of readings. “We will not focus on one particular poet, but rather on a sampling of poetry from a variety of authors,” she said. Cost is $45, which includes lunch.
