On a little weekend trip to Valparaiso earlier this year, I discovered a new pasta shop (well… new to me – it had relocated from an earlier, smaller place in Chesterton) that instantly moved up to one of my top favorites in the state. I’d place it in my top 5 for sure. It’s called Albano’s Pasta Shop.
We stayed downtown at the Valparaiso Inn and looked for some nearby restaurants to visit while in town. Valparaiso has an amazing restaurant scene, and it’s tough to narrow it down. I didn’t really know much about Albano’s Pasta Shop, but I am all about fresh pasta and couldn’t wait to try it out. I was completely wowed with every single bite.
The decor and atmosphere are cool and hip, but with a little nod to the kind of old-school pasta place where you could picture a short, stout, sweet Italian grandmother rolling out pasta made with love. The pasta is made with love by Nick Albano and his staff. And with the open kitchen concept, I loved getting an unclose look at the pasta being rolled out before being cooked to perfection for us.
We started with some amazing homemade bread and six-hour slow-simmered tomato dipping sauce, which was incredible. I was excited to sample a few of their amazing homemade pasta variations, including short rib tortellini and corn tortellini. I also had one of the best desserts of my life on that visit – the honey lavender cheesecake. It’s been several months, and I still literally dream about it.
If you go to just one Valparaiso restaurant in 2021, I want you to make it to Albano’s Pasta Shop. I really loved it that much. In fact, I’m made one of my new year’s resolutions to get there several times in 2021 for an amazing pasta dinner.
