Oink! This Animal Rescue in Hendricks County is A Literal Pigsty

By Amy Lynch on August 28, 2020
Back

You’ll find much more than three little pigs at this Hendricks County animal attraction. More like 50, in fact!

Founded and managed by high school senior Olivia Head, Oinking Acres Farm Rescue and Sanctuary in Brownsburg offers a safe refuge for unwanted and abandoned pot-bellied pigs in need of a good home. Online schooling allows Olivia the time and opportunity to care for the animals in her charge twice a day, an obvious labor of love.

With poise beyond her years, Olivia leads small private tours of the facility several days a week (reservations are required), introducing visitors to resident and adoptable animals from a menagerie that includes pigs, ducks, goats, cats, roosters, and peacocks.

Since 2017, Olivia and her team have rescued nearly 200 pigs from abandonment, neglectful owners, animal shelters, and hoarding situations, placing almost 150 into loving new homes.

The hour-long farm tours begin with a sign-in, followed by an introduction from Olivia herself. Visitors then take a guided walk during which they get to see dozens of pot-bellied pigs in grassy fenced enclosures, sleeping in cozy pens inside the family’s old dairy barn, and wandering across wide-open spaces.

Guests are invited to pet many of the pigs and are welcome to BYO apples, carrots, and cucumbers to feed them for much-appreciated treats. Just be careful to watch your fingers!

Oinking Acres is a 501c3 organization that relies on donations and merchandise sales to rescue, rehab, and rehome these deserving animals. Guests are asked to make a $10 per person donation for tours, and animal sponsorships are also available.

For more information or to make a tour reservation, go to oinkingacres.org.
