USA Today 10Best has released their 2019 Small Towns Readers’ Choice Awards, which includes two cities from the Hoosier State! See which small towns made the list by reading below.
Angola took third in the voting for the Best Historic Small Towns in America!
USA Today had this to say about the storied city:
“Founded in 1838, Angola is home to several attractions on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Angola Commercial Historic District, Steuben County Courthouse and the Steuben County Jail. The town is also home to a Civil War monument and a historic movie house.”
The old Steuben County Jail was originally a 12 by 12 hewn log jail built in 1837. Silas Doty, a famous horse thief, actually escaped the building through a hole in the floor!
This historic brick courthouse is located in downtown Angola. Built in 1868, it replaced an old wood frame building and was inspired by Faneuil Hall in Boston. The original cost to build the structure was $27,000, which would equate to over $500,000 today!
USA Today readers voted Madison 4th in the Best Small Town Food Scene category!
USA Today states:
“The small town of Madison packs a big culinary punch with more than 20 restaurants in the downtown area alone. There’s a little bit of everything, from sliders and pizza to seafood and seasonal fare.”
