Years ago, I used to drive through North Manchester (Wabash County) on my way to and from Syracuse (Kosciusko County), and every so often would stop at the Dairy Queen along the way, when I thought my wife wouldn’t find out. I also played Ultimate Frisbee there for a couple years, but the 40 minute drive was almost too much to do just for a 90 minute game.
The one thing I didn’t know they had was the FunFest By The River celebration. It kicks off on the second weekend of August, from Thursday the 8th through the Saturday the 10th, and this year marks the 42nd year they’ve held the event.
The event will have a watermelon feed, a cruise in car show, a Camaro raffle, and a “Meet the Beetles” concert, a 5K race and 1 mile fun run, a bed race, and a parade. Also, look for the carnival rides, a tennis tournament, a “Best Dive” contest (still hoping someone will do the Triple Lindy), and an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.
Warning: Do not participate in the Best Dive contest or ride the carnival rides immediately after the breakfast buffet.
And while we’re stuffing our faces, there’s also a hamburger eating contest and a pizza eating contest, plus a community swim, to help thin out the herd.
Finally, there will be music all three nights of the FunFest. Thursday night is country music night with Wright Place Country Music; Friday is “Meet the Beetles” with a Beatles tribute band; and, Saturday night has Small Town, a local band that covers several different genres, including classic rock, country, and contemporary Christian.
