When I was a little girl, my family lived in Richmond, Indiana, where we belonged to St. Mary’s Church. I have a very clear memory of scores of Italian grandmothers descending on the school cafeteria to host Spaghetti Suppers. It was that memory that came rushing back to me when I saw an advertisement for a six-course Italian dinner party hosted by Maria Mitrione’s Italian Market at the 4th Floor Blues Club in the town’s Depot District.
The menu for the March 2nd dinner party is much fancier than the pots of spaghetti that were served up in the St. Mary’s cafeteria:
Antipasto: Salami, Italian cheeses, coppacoli and vegetables
Primo: Italian stew with sausage, tomatoes, potatoes and peppers
Secondi de Pasta: Pasta with a choice of three sauces – aioli, Mom’s Marinara, alfredo
Contorno: Italian house salad and broccoli salad
Dolce: Tiramisu, cannoli, pizzelles
Fresh baked bread and olives will be available on each table. Beer and wine samplings will also be available. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $25 per person, available at Maria Mitrione’s, the Wayne County Tourism Bureau and other locations. Proceeds benefit several Richmond-area nonprofits. This event is for people age 21 and over only.
If you can’t make it to the dinner party, or you’re looking for a family-friendly option, consider these great Italian options in Richmond:
- Galo’s Italian Grill – An independently owned Italian restaurant that can take on any of those chain places
- Little Sheba’s Restaurant – While the menu extends beyond the borders of Italy, best-sellers at this Depot District spot include the spaghetti, Marty’s manicotti and cheese-filled ravioli. This is a great place for a family dinner out.
- Maria Mitrione’s Italian Market – Part store, part deli, Maria Mitrione’s offers delicious Italian sandwiches from the requisite meatball sub to Italian roast beef with peppers
