Broad Ripple Brewpub and their Veggie Mushroom Burger (#Super46)

By admin on January 4, 2012
Back

As one of the featured Super 46 Sandwiches, the Veggie Mushroom Burger at the Broad Ripple Brewpub is an excellent sandwich option for veggie lovers or for anyone looking for some lighter fare. I talked with Kurt, the kitchen manager at the Broad Ripple Brewpub, about the restaurant and the Veggie Mushroom Burger. The Broad Ripple Brewpub has been around for is nestled in the heart of Broad Ripple – a neighborhood just a few short miles north of downtown Indianapolis. The Broad Ripple Brewpub used to purchase factory-made black bean veggie burgers (think of the veggie burgers you might have you your freezer at home) and one of the cooks suggested they try to make their own. Their house-made Veggie Mushroom Burger is put together with button and portobello mushrooms, shredded broccoli, carrots and organic rolled oats.

I was surprised how big the burger was, it looked like it was a good 30% larger than the standard frozen veggie burger patty – and much tastier. Form the first bite, you can taste the velvety richness of the portobellos, but the rest of the burger balances out the flavor so it’s not overly rich. I added a slice of pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and raw onions to the burger. Topped off with a nice soft Kaiser bun, it was very good and surprisingly filling. It’s also worth $1.50 to substitute the Brew Pub Chips for the standard potato chips that come with the burger. They’re great medium-thickness discs of fried potatoes with the perfect amount of crispness on the outside and still nice and soft inside.

Founded in 1990, the Broad Ripple Brewpub is reminiscent of a typical English pub with dark wood throughout and dim lighting, but one of the most unique features of the pub is that it’s located in an old house, so there are plenty of smaller rooms and narrow hallways between the rooms. In warm-weather months there’s a large patio with seating for up to 70 people. While the Veggie Mushroom Burger is a great sandwich to try at the ‘pub, you have to try one of their house-brewed beers while you’re there too. Some of the beers they frequently have on tap include an I.P.A., a Lawn Mower Pale Ale, and a German-style Dunkel Lager. Keeping with their English roots, they always have one (sometimes two) English-style cask ales on tap like their E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter) and the Monon Porter. As a homebrewer myself, I love to try microbrew beer whenever I visit a restaurant that makes their own.
