  • Triple XXX Family Restaurant and their Duane Purvis All-American Burger (#Super46)

Triple XXX Family Restaurant and their Duane Purvis All-American Burger (#Super46)

By admin on January 3, 2012
Back

The Triple XXX Family Restaurant is an institution in West Lafayette (home of Purdue University). While the name might surprise you, the restaurant started in 1929 as a root beer stand selling Triple XXX Root Beer (which they still make and sell). The three Xs indicated the high quality of the drink. There are now only two Triple XXX Restaurants left in the country and the one in West Lafayette is the only one that still serves Triple XXX Root Beer.

Carrie and Greg Ehresman – owners of Triple XXX Family Restaurant – couldn’t have been more excited to have us visit and try out the best selling burger they make – the Duane Purvis All-American Burger. They name many of their burgers and sandwiches after famous athletes from Purdue including the Bernie Flowers All-Pro (1/4th lb burger with onion, lettuce, tomato and Miracle Whip served on a toasted sesame seed bun), the Drew Brees First Choice w/ Chicken Fried Steak (2 eggs cooked to order, choice of either chicken fried steak or 1/3rd lb. burger, choice of fried potatoes or hash browns with sausage gravy and two grilled buttermilk biscuits) and of course, the Duane Purvis All-American. All of their burgers are made from freshly ground Grade-A Sirloin. Every day Greg slices the sirloin (about an 85/15 mixture) and grinds it in their prep kitchen above the restaurant.

Triple XXX Family Restaurant - Duane Purvis Burger

The Duane Purvis All-American Burger features a decent-sized glob of Jif peanut butter, topped with two 1/8th oz. sirloin patties and finished with cheese and your choice of fresh veggie toppings (I had mine with pickles, onions, tomatoes, lettuce and onions). You might be a bit wary about putting peanut butter on a burger, but I was pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite as the saltiness of the sirloin burger and the cheese was a really nice balance for the sweet creaminess of the peanut butter.

If you come to the Triple XXX, you can order standard Coca-Cola products or coffee, but forget about those for now. You have to try the root beer. Whether you get a frosted mug of root beer or a root beer float, you can’t leave without trying the drink the restaurant is named after.

Check out the video below (or click here if you’re reading this on a mobile device or in a feed reader) to see a short video of the Triple XXX Family Restaurant, the Duane Purvis All-American Burger and watch me taste the burger (Spoiler Alert: It’s delicious!).

The Triple XXX is a great place to go for good burgers and comfort food. It’s open 24-hours a day, 6 days a week (they close at 8 on Sundays), so just about any time you’re hungry, they’ll be open for business. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner or a late-night snack, there’s plenty of variety. They were even featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins & Dives in its inaugural season, Guy Fieri has been there and approves.
