I would consider myself a 50/50 mix of Maxxinista and vintage. You might find me roaming the isles of TJ Maxx downtown or giving new life to a retro dress at one of downtown’s vintage shops. Whatever my style for the day might be, downtown Indianapolis delivers. Indianapolis and fashion are not typically two words you see together – but, I beg to differ. Our city is home to several unique shops, organizations and events that set us apart with one-of-a-kind flair.
The Circle City will be gracing the runway for the 5th Midwest Fashion Week Oct. 19 – 22. MWF attracts several innovative designers and boasts special events such as the Taste of Fashion Oct. 21 at Sensu and the Fashion is Empowerment runway show at Old National Centre Oct. 22. But that’s not all! Be sure to check out all of Downtown’s unique fashion events throughout October and early November:
Wear it pink in celebration of breast cancer survivors during the Puttin’ on the Pink Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show at the Marriott Downtown. Nordstrom will provide all the fashions for the 40 models in the show.
Concrete Runway, a FREE and unique fashion experience, will feature models strutting along Mass Ave’s sidewalk starting from the 600 block and concluding in front of Black Apple Boutique & Styling Agency where fashion photo shoots will begin.
Stake out the art scene on a night of one-of-a-kind fashion designs at Fashion Unbound Oct. 22 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Stay late and strut your stuff at the Behind the Seams After Party while mingling with the designers and models. Both events will feature live entertainment and a fashion show.
How do we adorn a city? Distinctive style, sparkling accessories and good lighting. Dressing Indianapolis, an Indy Talks program, will touch on the parallels and intersections between fashion design and urban design Nov. 1at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at 7 p.m. The event will feature four presentations and a follow-up panel discussion. Between each lecture, local fashion designers will express Indy neighborhoods as wearable art. Attendees will vote for their favorite.
Feast your eyes on Downtown’s largest week-long event, the 16th annual Spirit & Place Festival Nov. 4 – 13. The festival engages as many as 20,000 people in more than 40 programs in various locations. This year’s theme is “the body.” Transport yourself into a world of exotic traditions from the four corners of the world and discover how different cultures view beauty, adornment and body modification Nov. 9 at Beauty Abroad. Join individuals from places such as India, Kenya, Thailand, and Brazil, who will reveal the true meaning of many practices you may have seen but not understood.
