Don’t miss your opportunity to honor, respect, and remember America’s heroes as the American Veterans Traveling Tribute comes to Indiana this year. Kokomo is the only city in Indiana to host the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) in 2011.
The AVTT (unlike other Traveling Wall displays held in Kokomo in past years) will be open to the public 24 hours each day starting at Noon on September 29th through 3 p.m. on October 2nd. Admission is free. The Tribute & Traveling Wall will be on display at the GM Components Holdings grounds, located on the southeast corner of U.S. 31 and Boulevard Street in Kokomo.
The AVTT will present The Cost of Freedom Tribute and a variety of exhibits with its centerpiece being the Traveling Wall, an 80 percent scale version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. Memorials and tribute panels dedicated to World War II, Korean War, 9/11, casualties at Fort Hood, and Police and Firefighters will be displayed.
In addition the AVTT has a special “Gold Dog Tag” display, a one of a kind tribute honoring those who have fallen for which there is not currently a memorial for their honor and remembrance, specifically for members of the armed forces who have given their lives during the Global War on Terror. Guest speakers and daily ceremonies will also be held during the four-day event.
The entire tribute will arrive in Kokomo with a large motorcycle escort, accompanied by several antique automobiles with local World War II Veterans, and an American Huey 369 Helicopter flying overhead on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Riders are welcome to participate. Visit the website for the full escort plan and details.
Several hotels are offering special rates for those coming to Kokomo to attend the American Veterans Traveling Tribute. Special rates will be offered for a limited time only, and all overnight visitors will receive a visitors bag full of information about the Kokomo area and local Veterans memorials.
