Civil War Heritage Days and National Powwow Coming to Hendricks County This Summer

By Visit Indiana on June 12, 2011
Back

School bells across the state have gone silent for a couple of months. But that doesn’t mean learning and fun need to dry up like my already parched lawn this summer. Two big events coming to Hendricks County in the next few weeks present great chances to teach your kids a little history and culture while they enjoy the festival atmosphere.

First up is Civil War Heritage Days the weekend of June 25-26. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The weekend-long event will teach everyone what that monumental period of time was like for Hendricks County residents, while honoring those who served. You can watch a fashion show ($5 admission) or experience high tea ($15 admission). Kids can see what they would be doing to help the war effort through crafts and games. Many booths, exhibits, concerts and demonstrations are also planned, which are free and open to the public. Events will take place at the Danville Public Library, Hendricks County Historical Museum, Hendricks County Courthouse Square and the grounds of the Hendricks County Government Center, all within a short walk of each other. For a complete event listing, click here.

Intertribal dancing at the National Powwow

For the first time since 1990, Indiana will again host the National Powwow, scheduled for July 6-9. The National Powwow, in its 42nd year, shares the values of American Indian culture with the general public. You can watch Intertribal dancing, see a tipi encampment, sample Indian food and participate in craft demonstrations. For kids, there will be a princess contest, children’s powwow and other activities. A complete schedule is available here. Cost is $5 for adults, $2 for kids 6-12 and children 5 and under are free. All events take place at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex.

Chances are, your kids will have such a great time they won’t even realize they’re learning. I bet you will, too!
