Last year, I had the privilege of going to my first ever Indianapolis 500. This is an amazing event that everyone should experience at least once in their life. It is the largest single day sporting event in the world with around 400,000 people attending each year. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
When I went last year, I woke up at about 4am and met up in the parking lot of my fraternity house with about 30 people and we made our way to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We were let into the grounds at around 7am. The admission for lawn seating cost us all $20 a person. Once we got there we parked the cars and immediately started to play music and grill breakfast. The 500 is an amazing atmosphere and something unlike any other sporting event. Everybody in the infield mingles and simply hangs out before the race begins. It is auto racing’s version of a pregame tailgate.
By the time the race starts the anticipation for the event is extremely high and patrons have lined up all along the inside of the track to view the cars wiz past them at incredible speeds. Thankfully for the crowd, the race is also shown on a large screen inside of the stadium. This gives them the opportunity to both get a better view of the race and see an updated leader board.
This year the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday May 29th. Tickets are available on site and at the Indianapolis Motor speedway website. Some racers who are considered favorites are Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Danica Patrick, and Marco Andretti. This is a great experience and a day willed with fun for a cheap price. I recommend this event to all young people looking for a great time in Indianapolis.
