When I first started working at Conner Prairie in February, things were running at a good pace. I was busy, had plenty to do but everyone kept saying, “just wait until outdoor season, that’s when things get really busy.” Yeah, I’m sure they do…
Conner Prairie is currently coming off an extremely busy and successful Civil War Days(check out our recent post about Civil War days) weekend and is now moving on and gearing up for 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana. This is one of the projects I was brought on in the middle of. Everyone I met was already geared up and excited for Civil War Journey and I had no idea what it even was.
The “ah-hah” moment for me was when Ellen Rosenthal, our president and CEO, came into the marketing staff meeting and said, “Does everyone realize the volume of the experience we are getting ready to open?” and of course the whole table swings their heads and looks at me, the new girl. I had no idea that this was such a ground breaking experience for museums across the nation and it was happening right here at Conner Prairie. Ellen went through the experience and broke it down so I could understand that this is a transformational experience in which you play a role.
1863 Civil War Journey will guide you through a unique, first-person view of the activities that led to the only Civil War battle that took place on Indiana soil. Discover what motivated them to take on a role in the war as you and your family gain a better understanding of the impact of historical events on everyday, ordinary people. Not to mention the theatrical wizardry, visual effects, sound, video, staging and sets that add to the overall experience. Civil War Journey is not about reading history, it’s about experiencing history.
