Now that spring is officially here, my family has been on the hunt for some of Indiana’s best playgrounds. I’ve already written about a great playground in Columbus, Indiana, where I live, called Freedom Field. This weekend while visiting my sister’s family, we spent an hour at the Playscape playground at Ellis Park in Danville, Indiana, and I can add it to my list of favorite spots.
The playground is almost entirely wood, which gives it a very natural look. There are lots of tunnels, ramps and stairs perfect for little explorers. My 2-year-old son loved getting to drive a couple of the pretend cars, while my 3-year-old nephew couldn’t get enough of the giant tire swing. There’s also a great bouncy bridge.

The best aspect of Playscape is its size. It’s large, so there’s plenty of room for kids to spread out, burn off a lot of energy, and stayed entertained for quite a while. Yet it’s still easy for parents to keep an eye on the kids. Another aspect that’s helpful to parents is that it is almost entirely fenced in, so little ones can’t wander too far off.
Beyond Playscape, Ellis Park is a wonderful outdoor spot for families. You could start a kickball game or have a picnic lunch. Tucked away at the bottom of the hill just east of downtown Danville, you’ll find it conveniently located just off U.S. 36. Mark your calendar for April 23, when Ellis Park hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and Rubber Ducky Race. In the summer, be sure to bring the swimsuits and the sunscreen as it features a great outdoor pool. And in the winter, it’s a great place for Christmas lights!
