Wined, Dined and Dazzled at The Capital Grille

My fiancé and I went to The Capital Grille for the first time on Tuesday January 25, 2011. The Devour Downtown event happened to fall within our 2 year anniversary. So naturally, we were excited to enjoy a fine dining experience at a good deal. Let me rephrase, a great deal.

When we arrived the restaurant was packed, which to me was surprising. I’m a server and to see a place completely booked this early in the work week was a good sign of things to come. I was ready to try this restaurant that is obviously in high demand.

Upon arriving at our romantic table for two the manager pulled out my chair, offered to take my coat and placed my napkin on my lap. We were then promptly given ice cold glasses of water and menus.

The Capital Grille is known for its extensive wine list of over 5,000 different selections. I opted for a nice glass of Riesling while my company enjoyed a Merlot. Our server presented the wine and allowed for us taste before filling our wine glasses full. It was clear they were here to give us the best experience possible and so far they were spot on. He then described our menu choices with such detail I wanted to order them all. However, I stuck to the rules and enjoyed the atmosphere while eagerly awaiting my meal.

After sipping our wine and eating an assortment of fresh bread the first course arrived. We both chose the crisp caeser salad.  For our entrée we both chose steak, as The Capital Grille is well known for its tender cuts of meat. My fiancé enjoyed – and he did enjoy – the famous 14 oz Bone-In Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin with Shallot Butter. I chose the delicious Morel Mushroom Crusted Tournedos with Red Wine Sauce. As a side compliment we had the mashed potatoes, which were so rich and creamy I joked for the recipe with our server.

Once claiming defeat our server cleared our table, which he did thoroughly each time a course was finished even going to the detail of clearing of bread crumbs and unneeded silverware. I might also add that our water glasses never went empty and for a water-drinker like me that was a huge plus!

Finally, for the third course we both went with a colder,  in-house dessert. My fiancé ordered the blueberry sorbet and I the chocolate mint ice cream. Although we were both completely satisfied before the dessert, we finished it in triumph. Then to top the entire evening off our server brought us two flutes of champagne, compliments of the house.

Needless to say we will return and request the service of John Irvine II. I would highly recommend The Capital Grille to anyone wanting the ultimate fine dining experience in downtown Indianapolis.
