This post was written by a Butler University student about their experience at one of 40+ restaurants involved in Devour Downtown – a prix-fixe way to experience some of Indianapolis’ best downtown restaurants twice a year. Earlier this week I went to Tavern on South with a friend of mine from Butler. Tavern on South is a restaurant near Lucas Oil Stadium located on, as its name suggests, West South Street. Tavern on South is a casual, but stylish spot and I went there to take advantage of Indianapolis’ Devour Downtown event, which runs through Feb. 5. Devour Downtown is food and drink showcase in which downtown restaurants offer a three course meal to customers for $30.
Tavern on South is one of the restaurants taking part in the showcase. For $30 I got a Caesar Salad to start, which had amazing dressing and was really good with ground pepper. Then I got the Blue Cheese Crusted Filet Mignon, which was amazing if cooked slightly less than ordered, but it was the perfect portion size and a tasty dish. For my third and final course I had the Whipped Cheesecake which was light, fluffy, creamy, presented perfectly and my favorite dish of the evening, it was perfect. My friend had the Grilled Chicken entrée and she liked it but said it was a little to blackened on the outside, but it was juicy and tender on the inside. It also came with asparagus and a delicious sauce. It tasted good to me, but it could have been better if it hadn’t been slightly burnt.
One of my favorite things about Tavern on South was its earthy and warm feel when you are inside. It was very casual, it had old photos on the walls, TVs, and the restaurant played smooth jazzy music while we ate, it was a really nice décor. The service was very prompt, if not a little too prompt. We felt a little rushed as we were eating and considering how uncrowded the restaurant was, it seemed odd. The server was alright, he was laid back if not bordering on too laid back, but he was fine. One of the big pluses about going to Tavern on South was the parking; they have their own parking lot on site so it was very easy to get a spot, get in and get eating. Although it is situated near Lucas Oil, Victory Field, and the Convention Center, if you are not doing something at one of those places there isn’t really much else to do around the restaurant like shopping or more leisurely activities. It is however, a great place to go after a Colts or Indians game or after a visit to the Convention Center.
I would recommend that people go to the restaurant especially during or after a Colts game. You could go just to watch the game enjoy some drinks in a sophisticated setting or to enjoy cheesecake after it. I would not recommend going there on a date or with the family – it just wasn’t that type of spot. Although it could be more romantic in the warmer months because Tavern on South does have outdoor seating on its upper floor, and sitting out there looking at the skyline and Lucas Oil at night might be really nice. So while Devour Downtown is going on (it ends on February 5th) make sure to take advantage of the great deals at downtown spots.
