Laughs Guaranteed at Morty's Comedy Joint

By Visit Indiana on January 7, 2011

Laughter is an instant vacation.  ~Milton Berle

I don’t have many chances to take vacations or get-aways, but over the holidays some of my friends spent an evening together laughing. A lot. And it was sort of like a little vacation.

We all decided to get a Groupon to Monty’s Comedy Joint in Indianapolis (2 tickets and an appetizer for $15, score!). My friend Sue’s birthday is the day after Christmas and she always makes a point to throw herself a fabulous party so that her birthday isn’t forgotten. We settled on seeing Costaki on December 30th.

I had never been to Morty’s before, but I have been to other comedy clubs and was curious to see how this one compared. When we arrived, some of our friends were at the bar enjoying cocktails. We used our groupon to get in and then went into the club. You can get drinks at the bar, but keep this in mind: when you go inside the club those drinks don’t count toward your two item minimum. I came prepared, having already found that tidbit of useful information on Yelp.

We ordered appetizers and food. I had the pork tenderloin sandwich ($9). I had read reviews (also on Yelp) about the menu and decided to stick with a safe choice. Morty’s serves pretty typical bar food and the tenderloin was solid, but not exceptional. I would NOT recommend the fish and chips. One of my friends ordered it and it was actually a tiny fish sandwich with krinkle fries.  Beer and drink selections are great. Admission plus a beer, a tasty long island, and sandwich – overall the night cost me about $44, including tip.

Moving on to the Best Part of the Night: The comedians were ALL funny. From the emcee of the night to the two hilarious warm-up comedians, to the headliner, I laughed the whole time. The headliner was Costaki Economopoulos , who is best known for “The Economonologue,” a weekly segment on the Bob & Tom Radio Show. He’s also written for lots of comedy shows, including The Tonight Show and The Late Show. It was no wonder that Morty’s was sold-out on a Thursday night. The club is very clean and smoke-free.

Morty’s Comedy Joint is on 96th Street in Indianapolis. Check out their line-up and make plans for a roaring good time.
