Indiana Artisan: Carolyn Madvig, Sleeping Dogs Studio

Sleeping Dogs StudioCarolyn Madvig, of Sleeping Dogs Studio in Bloomington (Monroe County), is a mixed media master. Whether it’s wooden boxes, jewelry holders, or even picture frames, Carolyn creates these gorgeous one-of-a-kind keepsakes. She uses everyday elements, like leaves, fibers, or historical elements, like vintage photographs.

Imagine a unique collage on a keepsake box, a decorative plate, or a jewelry holder made from different fibers, rubber-stamped images, papers, even postage stamps. Carolyn sorts through the different elements — often hundreds of them — until she finds just the right combination for that particular piece of artwork.

Carolyn became an Indiana Artisan with a gorgeous submission of an 8″ x 10″ earring holder, a 5″ x 7″ picture frame, and a keepsake box, all indicative of the style she creates at Sleeping Dogs. These pieces, like all of their others, keep in line with their vision to recycle everyday objects, and to turn them into art.

Carolyn’s artwork can be found outside of Indiana, especially on the East Coast. Stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, and New York all carry samples of her work. But you can also find her at any variety of art fairs each summer. Visit the Sleeping Dogs Studio website for her 2011 schedule.
