It seems that Christmas comes before Thanksgiving nowadays. But if you are like me, the day after Thanksgiving is the official kick-off. Other than bringing out the Christmas lights and the Christmas music, I never had a big symbolic gesture to symbolize the epic start to Christmas.
The Circle of Lights in Downtown Indianapolis is that grand gesture to begin the season. Presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and the Electrical Workers of IBEW 481, the “lighting of the tree” has become quite the Indianapolis tradition.
For 48 years, this free event has captured the excitement of Christmas and the holiday season. This year, seven exciting acts will perform from 6-7pm including guest Sandi Patty, local performers Brian Harvey, Extreme Rhythm Project, Jessica Kelley, Kim Hicks, Tadd Peebles and The JB Band.
The Circle of Lights also boasts impressive larger-than-life toy soldiers, sailors, and peppermint sticks. Santa will arrive to make his first official appearance for the season. After the official lighting of the tree, a fireworks show will end the celebration.
Whether you are having Thanksgiving in Indianapolis with family, driving through town on your way home, or venturing downtown to shop on “Black Friday” the Circle of Lights must be added to your plans to begin your countdown to Christmas.
