Family Fun Hidden In the Fields of Southern Indiana

By admin on October 12, 2010
Back

As much as I love Indianapolis, the town I will always call home is Shoals.  Nestled in the hills of southern Indiana, Shoals is home to lots of cornfields and approximately 2,000 people.  There is something about fall in a rural town that makes it one of the most exciting times of the year.  I can’t lie, watching the leaves change and taking hayrides are still my favorite!  Like I mentioned, cornfields line the gravel roads and if you happen to be out for a country cruise, you may just discover one of the best kept secrets of Martin County.

Tucked away in 600-acres, you will find the Lark Ranch and the 15-acre corn maze that attracts families from all over the state.  The Lark Ranch has been providing me with memories since before it was even the Lark Ranch!  Matt Lark, family friend and ranch owner, has been steadily building for as long as I can remember.  In addition to a new corn maze design, there seems to be a new activity for kids every year.

My favorite Lark Ranch corn maze!

Lark Ranch offers visitors a variety of kid-friendly activities including pony rides, a petting zoo, and a pumpkin train ride.  If you are looking for a more educational experience, check out the weaving exhibit or help the kids mine for gems.  After they have their fun, make sure to take a relaxing hayride around the ranch before you pick pumpkins.  Don’t leave without taking some time to breathe in that fresh country air and enjoy the quaintness of small town southern Indiana.

For the big kids who enjoy activities in the dark, make sure to bring your flashlight for the real corn maze experience.  You can’t beat looking up at the stars on a clear night.  Oh, and just a little advice, make sure you bring a road map and wear your boots if it’s been raining!

Lark Ranch is open Friday 4-10pm, Saturday 12-10pm, and Sunday 12-6pm.  Admission to the maze is $6 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and under 5 is free.  There are additional charges for the bouncy barn, pumpkin train, pony ride, and gem mine.  Find your perfect pumpkin?  You can buy it for $0.25/lb.

For more information on what the Lark Ranch has to offer your family, make sure you check out the website!
