Have you ever had persimmon pudding? Have you ever even had persimmons?
It’s not for lack of trying or lack of interest though.
It’s actually because, honest to God, I thought persimmons were a flower. That is, until I saw a notice for the Persimmon Festival in Mitchell (Lawrence County), from September 18 – 25. Apparently, it’s a fruit! (Who knew?!)
The 64th annual Persimmon Festival will be held in downtown Mitchell, and will have carnival rides, food, and contests, starting on Monday the 20th. According to the Persimmon Festival home page, this festival started out as a way to celebrate the persimmon trees that grow throughout Lawrence County and the rest of southern Indiana.
There are fund raising dinners, including a lasagna dinner on Monday, a pork dinner on Tuesday (for the Marion Township Fire Department), and a Fish Fry on Friday.
Entertainment includes dance demonstrations by the Mitchell Dance Team, Mitchell Singers, karaoke, and several local and area bands.
There will also be a variety of exhibits, including antique tractors, classic and historic cars, and arts and crafts.
And, to cap it all off, the Grand Persimmon Festival Parade, which is one of Indiana’s largest parades. It starts at 2:00 pm, on Saturday the 25th.
