Upcoming Events in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Springtime is an exciting time in Northwest Indiana as our beautiful parks come to life once again after a long cold winter. If you’re looking for something to do in April – the National Park has many exciting events coming up.

Here’s a sample of upcoming events in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in April 2010.

Threatened Lake Michigan
Date: 11/7/2009, 12/5/2009, 2/6/2010, 4/3/2010
Time: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Location: Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center

Details:
Join a ranger and discover some of the greatest threats facing Lake Michigan. The spiny water flea, round goby, and zebra mussel are just a few of the invasive species investigated. There will also be discussions on the asian carp, the rusty crawfish and some of the ways we can prevent more invaders.

Kids Fun at the Visitor Center
Date: Every Sunday Weekly from 9/6/2009 to 5/30/2010
Time:
Location: Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center

Details:
Join a ranger in the Visitor Center activity room for an afternoon of fun kids activities and stories.

Music Heritage Series
Date: 4/16/2010
Time: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Location: Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center

Details:
Join the Save the Tunes Council and share in the celebration of old time music. Tune up your vocal cords for a sing-along and gather up on the thrid Friday of every month from 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center.

The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments.

Meet at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center located on Route S.R. 49 near the intersection of U.S. Route 20. For more information about this program or other activities at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, contact the information desk at 219-926-7561, extension 225.

Spring Blooms Hike
Date: 4/17/2010, 5/1/2010, 5/22/2010
Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Location: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center

Details:
Meet a ranger at the visitor center and carpool to the week`s best trail where you will explore the forest for wildflowers and other signs of spring.

Meet at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center located on Route S.R. 49 near the intersection of U.S. Route 20. For more information about this program or other activities at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, contact the information desk at 219-395-1882.

Green Gary Day
Date: April 24, 2010
Time: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Location: Paul H. Douglas Center

Details:
In celebration of National Park Week and Earth Day, join in the family fun while learning about the natural resources of the national aleshore and the City of Gary. Kids can earn a special Junior Ranger button, too.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 391 units of the National Park System ranging form Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore includes 15 miles of the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan and 15,000 acres of beach, woods, marshes, and prairie inn the northwest corner of Indiana. More than 2 million visitors come to this national park each year. More information can be found at www.nps.gov/INDU.
