In all the time I lived in Syracuse, Indiana (Kosciusko County), I never had the chance to make it over to the Ligonier Marshmallow Festival in Noble County in Northeast Indiana, near Fort Wayne. And now that I live three hours away, I have the urge to go, but I can’t.
The festival runs over Labor Day weekend, starting Thursday, September 3 with the Festival Queen pageant, and running through Monday, September 7, ending with the Grand Parade and is about all things marshmallow. Featuring a classic car show, a vintage baseball game between two teams from Warsaw and Winona Lake (Kosciusko County), pedal tractor pulls and races, plus a bike rodeo, magic shows and jugglers.
In 2006, the marshmallow bake-off brought Ligonier some national notoriety when the Food Network did a segment on the marshmallow bake-off for the All-American Festivals show. They even feature the Lemon Cream Salad recipe on the website.
There will also be concerts on Saturday night, featuring Two Many People and The Shilos and Sunday night, with The Fords, and festival fan favorites, Spike & The Bulldogs.
It’s just not a festival without food either. In addition to the hundreds of thousands of marshmallows and the marshmallow roast on Friday night, there’s a pancake breakfast and chicken BBQ on Monday, plus food vendors throughout the weekend.
