Visit the Only Zoo in Northern Indiana

Many people don’t know that there is a zoo in Northwest Indiana in Michigan City. The Washington Park Zoo has been around for quite some time and is well worth a visit.

It’s, of course, very family friendly. The zoo is not large so your kids won’t get tired walking endless paths to see all the animals.

They Even Have a REAL Bear

You can get up and close and personal with tigers, monkeys, llamas, ostriches and much more. There are plenty of birds on display as well as a really cool reptile house that looks like a castle.

The zoo has an interesting layout – you are guided through it mostly uphill and so it creates a unique vertical zoo experience. The animals are well taken care of and the zoo recently added some new buildings to help accommodate visitors.

The View from the Top of the Observation Tower

The biggest highlight of the zoo is actually not an animal, but the WPA built observation tower located at the top of the hill the zoo is on. It’s well worth the climb to the top where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the rest of Northern Indiana. You can actually see across 3 or four counties on a clear day.

The Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm daily. Admission is $5.50 for adults and $4.50 for children. So, it’s a very affordable day out. And if you get hungry, there are plenty of places to eat at the zoo as well.
