What do hyenas and a baseball field have in common? In Fort Wayne, both are new additions to the city that will add tremendous value for visitors. African Journey is a fantastic new exhibit opening June 6 at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo (recently ranked as one of Parents Magazine’s top 5 family zoos). The former African Veldt has been transformed into a modern zoo experience, including the addition of new animals such as hyenas, lions, servals, honey badgers and a troop of banded mongoose. African Journey covers 20 acres and offers new interactive experiences. Visitors can stop to play a beat on some African drums, or – for a nominal fee – create a beaded necklace to take home. There’s also a special research station where visitors can view zebras and wildebeest in the African grasslands area through special cameras located on exhibit. This hands-on area allows you to control the cameras and get close-up views of the animals. A new viewing deck in the giraffe area allows visitors to go eye-to-eye with these magnificent creatures and offer them a snack of lettuce. Gone are the safari cars that used to take visitors around the perimeter of the exhibit. The new additions to the exhibit offer a much more interactive experience – bringing visitors closer to the animals. Just a few minutes away from the zoo in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne is the brand new Parkview Field, home of the Fort Wayne Tin Caps (an homage to Johnny Appleseed, who is buried in Fort Wayne). Formerly known as the Wizards, this Single A affiliate of the San Diego Padres moved in to a very impressive facility this spring. Anyone who has visited Victory Field in Indianapolis will feel right at home with the look and feel of this minor league ballpark. Various seating options are available, with most tickets costing from $5 to $9. Large groups and corporate events can take advantage of other areas such as the Appleseed Picnic Pavilion or the very cool Treetops Rooftop Party Area. Every seat or suite keeps you close to the action. A special children’s play area has activities such as a bounce house and rock climbing wall. And the food choices will satisfy every taste. Check out their website at TinCaps.com for more information.
