I’m sitting here in Madison – the midwest’s prettiest town, by the way- and the fall leaves are just starting to blanket the sidewalks. But, we’re thinking holidays and getting ready for our Nights Before Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes. Do you think this is an excuse for not raking? Whatever it is, Marci, the “Nights” coordinator, is already in super-holiday mode. She has the houses chosen and the tour route planned. I keep reminding her that Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the first weekend of the tour begins on Friday, November 28th. Nights Before Christmas runs for 2 weekends – November 28,29,30 and December 5,6,7. In the evening, of course, it’s a candlelight tour! Fridays and Saturdays, 5-9pm and Sundays, 4-7pm. I always hope for a flurry or two, just to set the mood (or maybe because I’m from New England).
Madison has been doing this tour for 27 years and our visitors have made it a family tradition. You’ll see 4 public historic sites along with 5 private homes not normally open to the public. There’s quite of variety-something for everyone.
My favorite way to do the tour is with Nights & Nibbles, a special progressive dinner (wine involved) & trolley ride in conjunction with “Nights”. I’m usually a tour leader and Nights & Nibbles has become a holiday tradition for a group of my friends. We all have a great time and a certain rivalry for having the most fun has developed with the group leaders. My group always has the most fun! Reservations are required and seating is limited.
