Kayaking for Amateurs

Yes, that’s right, I’m an amateur kayaker. Not really sure I qualify as either, but that’s what I’m calling myself. Last September, I took my first trip in a kayak down the Driftwood River (north of Columbus). Some friends and I headed down from Indy (an easy 45 minute drive) to Blue’s Canoe Livery. It’s located off I-65 @ US 31 across from Edinburgh Premium Outlets, you’ll have to drive into the woods a little to find it. They suited us up with life jackets, oars and a water-worthy vessel – canoe, kayak or raft – Guess which we chose. They offer 3 trips: 6 miles, 8 miles and overnight. We chose the 6 miles…didn’t want to get in over my head. Then they took us to the river access point (north off US 31), dropped us off and wished us luck! The 6 miles is supposed to take approximately 2 to 3 hours. Well, it took us a little longer – 5 hours – but who’s counting. The weather was gorgeous and the water was nice, even got some current action. Afterwards, tired and sunburned, we rewarded ourselves with giant, juicy hamburgers at Montana Mike’s near the Outlet.

Next time, I’ll wear more sunscreen and a lot time for shopping. 🙂
