1 Bear Wallow Distillery

4484 Old S.R. 46, Nashville, 812-657-4923

Take a Farm-to-Fifth tour at Indiana’s first retail distillery and see for yourself how staffers make Indiana corn whiskey in an old-fashioned copper-pot still. Sample a moonshine shake-up or handcrafted whiskey and rye inside the rustic-industrial tasting room.

HOURS: 11 am–5 pm Monday–Thursday; 11 am–6 pm Friday–Saturday.

WHAT TO ORDER: The Apple Pie Moonshine, made with all-local ingredients: Wilks & Wilson Spiced Apple Elixir, Indiana apple cider and, of course, moonshine.

2 Huber’s Starlight Distillery

19816 Huber Rd., Starlight, 812-923-9463

Brandies produced early-1800s-style are the specialty at Starlight Distillery, situated at the picturesque Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards, but plenty of other spirits are bottled here, too.

HOURS: 10 am–6 pm Monday–Saturday; noon–6 pm Sunday. Tours by appointment.

WHAT TO ORDER: The Starlight Sour: bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and Huber’s Chambourcin wine.

3 Broken Beaker Distillery

643 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis, 317-602-5546

Vokda was the first creation from the Broken Beaker, scheduled to open in downtown Indy by the beginning of 2016. It also does liqueurs–including rhubarb, ginger and cranberry–and fruit brandies.

HOURS: 4 pm–10 pm Monday–Wednesday; 4 pm–11 pm Thursday; 4 pm–12 am Friday; 2 pm–12 am Saturday; 2 pm–7 pm Sunday.

WHAT TO ORDER: The Fleming: vodka, muddled jalapeño and basil, honey simple syrup, lemon juice and Dolin blanc.

4 Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery

702 Virginia Ave., Indianapolis, 317-653-1806

Curl up with a cocktail by the fireplace in this refurbished 19th-century carriage house; Fletcher, the resident cat, may wander over to say hello. It’s a cozy spot for sampling limoncello, rum and much more.

HOURS: 2 pm–10 pm Monday–Thursday; noon–10 pm Friday–Sunday.

WHAT TO ORDER: The Rosales: a sweetly bracing melange of muddled strawberries and mint, vodka, lemon juice, raspberry syrup and soda water.

5 The Indiana Whiskey Company

1115 W. Sample St., South Bend, 574-520-1915

Everything that touches the small-batch whiskeys made here—the grains, even the stills—is made in Indiana. For a libation that playfully threatens to “kick your teeth in,” dare to try the Silver Sweet Corn Whiskey.

HOURS: 9 am–5 pm Monday–Friday.

WHAT TO ORDER: The Old Fashioned: whiskey, bourbon, simple syrup, bitters and lemon.

6 Cardinal Spirits

Handcrafted gin, rum, whiskey, vodka and liqueurs are served up here daily in the bucolic, bustling college town of Bloomington.
